  • Florian Benedikt Voegele

    Florian Benedikt Voegele

Scientist · July 23, 2026, Florian Benedikt reported to Osvaldo directly

Osvaldo Burastero was my mentor during my internship in the Garcia-Alai Group at EMBL Hamburg. Throughout my internship, he provided outstanding guidance and dedicated considerable time to teaching me the intricacies of software development, biophysical research, and the broader scientific working environment.

Osvaldo is a highly skilled software developer and researcher who approaches his work with efficiency, professionalism, and a strong ability to solve problems as they arise. As a mentor, he was patient, supportive and fair, providing thoughtful guidance while encouraging me to work independently and develop my own problem-solving skills.

  • Franco Marsico

    Franco Marsico

Statistical Genomics Researcher · July 13, 2026, Franco worked with Osvaldo on the same team

I had the privilege of starting my scientific career alongside Osvaldo at UBA, and it's been genuinely rewarding to watch his trajectory since. What stood out from day one was his rigor, his intellectual curiosity, and a critical thinking that never took a result at face value. He's also one of the most creative people I've worked with when it comes to building tools that other scientists actually use. Beyond that, he's a fantastic colleague, someone you can freely discuss and think through ideas with, without ego getting in the way.

  • Edward Avenell

    Edward Avenell

Project Officer at EMBL · July 7, 2026, Edward managed Osvaldo directly

Osvaldo was one of the first generation of ARISE fellows to join. It has been fantastic having him in the programme. He threw himself into the new programme, taking advantage of all the training and development opportunities, including his secondments at Institut Pasteur and Refeyn. His project the eSPC at EMBL Hamburg has been a great success and continues to provide easy to use software for the understanding of biophysical experiments. The experience and skills in tech and service development, project management he has gained and demonstrated with Maria Garcia and ARISE will make him a great addition to any institute.

  • Uroš Zavrtanik

    Uroš Zavrtanik

PhD in Biophysical Chemistry, Teaching Assistant · July 3, 2026, Uroš worked with Osvaldo but at different companies

Osvaldo brought my code from "GitHub graveyard" to a fully alive, well-maintained and easy-to-use ChiraKit platform. He's precise, careful, responsive, and his attention to detail pushed me to improve my own work as well. It has been a pleasure working with him!

  • Elias Daniel Lopez

    Elias Daniel Lopez

Lead Data Scientist · July 2, 2026, Elias Daniel was senior to Osvaldo

I had the opportunity to work with Osvaldo on the publication of a scientific paper, but our collaboration went far beyond that project. Over the years, we shared many discussions on technical, academic, and professional topics, which gave me firsthand insight into both his capabilities and his character.

Osvaldo combines a strong academic background with rigorous analytical thinking and a practical approach to solving complex problems. His contribution was instrumental in achieving the level of scientific rigor required for publication in a highly respected international journal.

Resume

Experience

  1. ARISE Research Fellow

    European Molecular Biology Laboratory
    Hamburg, Germany
    09/2021 - 08/2026

Main developer of eSPC, an open-source online platform with R Shiny applications for processing and analysing biophysical data. The platform received about 650 monthly visits in 2025 and has been independently linked by other research institutes. The tools have been published in peer-reviewed journals and are cited by other researchers in their publications.

During this project, I worked in a highly multidisciplinary environment, established new collaborations with other institutes and performed an Industry secondment at Refeyn, Oxford, England, and an Academic secondment at the Institute Pasteur, Paris, France. Furthermore, I oversaw the whole development pipeline, from prototyping to deployment.

  2. Doctoral studies
